On Audio Setup
10 years ago I would always been listening to music. I've got a pretty broad taste in music. In the 10 years I've had 3 large relocations both in terms of type of living style but also in location. Previously the amplifier and speakers was enough to make sure music was everywhere.
Skip 10 years - somethings have changed (floor speakers are replaced with smaller ones - amplifier broke and was replaced). Now I have a living room and open floor kitchen/dining room. The amplifier and speakers are in the living room, but most of the time is spend in or close to the kitchen, which is also where most of the music listening is now happening.
I've been running squeezeboxes since the Squeezebox2 was released - and I still do.
I got a used Boom 5 years ago and so - which brought the total numbers of devices to 3. Anyways the Boom so the major source of playing music. It works well enough, but there are certainly differences in the audio sensation when playing through dedicated speakers and amplifier as from the living room.
So today I hooked up a subwoofer to the Boom, which certainly helps the sound. But pondering on it, it's silly that the place where we have listen to the most music, we have the most mediocre music setup.
So today I started jumping into the subwoofer rabbit hole. After a while I realized that would only ever get me so far, due to the limited stereo image for the Boom.
Next came active speakers. So for me a line in or something similiar in an active speaker setup is need-to-have, as a squeezebox would still be the source in 90% of the use cases. Also the active speakers should have subwoofer output to be able to build upon later in case additional bass was needed. Obviously price matters too. I dont see my self throwing all my savings down this particular hole.
After some searching around, my current short list is something as follows:
Dali Zenzor 1 AX
I like them, because:
-
color
-
keyhole mount
-
Subwoofer output (if more bass is required)
-
price is within my set limits.
Yamaha NX-500
I like them, because:
-
color
-
Connectivity options
-
Subwoofer output (if more bass is required)
-
price is within my set limits.
Argon Audio Forte A4
I like them, because:
-
color
-
Connectivity options
-
Subwoofer output (if more bass is required)
-
price is within my set limits.
System Audio Saxo 3 aktiv
Is a contender. They are priced a little higher, but perhaps they are also sound better. But from the price point I obviously prefer the 3 others. Ears must decide.
Next steps?
So next steps is to head in Aarhus and actually listen to them, so get a feeling of what kind of sound signature they are actually producing. Guess that will be when I am in an office next - which is not for a couple of weeks - so lets see if I still want active speakers by then.
